REDUCE CHOLESTEROL (read articles on this at www.lef.org):
- Take flaxseed oil and other essential oils like Omega-3 to decrease the growth rate of atherosclerotic plaque and reduces the risk of arrhythmias. Keep in the freezer to avoid side effects such as burping. UDO’s Choice is a really good brand (unless allergic to soy). For those allergic to Omega-3, Krill Oil is an excellent alternative.
- L-carnosine is an antioxidant that helps rejuvinate cells, 500mg.
- Policosanol, take one tablet twice per day with meals: one in the afternoon and one in the evening. Or Sytrinol, one capsule twice daily. Do not take if it causes your cholesterol to drop below 180 mg/dL
- Sometimes just taking some extra fiber improves the function of the colon and reducing cholesterol. This can be as simple as taking some Metamucil bought at any drugtore to Fiber delights chewable tablets (containing inulin, FOS, and Avina Sativa), Ultimate Fiber (containing FOS, Acidophilus, Slippery Elm, Marshmellow Root, Psyllium Husk), Apple Pectin Fiber, WellBetx (Konjac root and Mullberry extract) to a full colon cleanse. Chitosan, three to six 500-mg chitosan capsules and one 1000 mg ascorbic acid capsule right before a high-fat meal. Brand: www.LEF.org has many different types of fiber such as listed above.
- Niacin, 1000 mg a day (if tolerable). Consider flush-free niacin (inositol hexanicotinate) to avoid a "red face."
- Shiitake mushrooms speed up the processing of cholesterol and stimulates the immune system. Cook them fresh with olive oil or buy in pill format.
- Artichoke extract, 300 mg, 3 times a day.
- Garlic, 600 to 48000 mg.
- Curcumin, 900 to 1800 mg.
- Gingko Biloba for increased coronary bloodflow 100 mg.
- Gugulipid, 140 mg.
- Green tea, 750 mg a day of green tea, 93% polyphenol extract. Ensure no caffeine sensitivity.
- Vitamin E, 400 to 800 IU daily
- Soy protein extract, 2 heaping teaspoons (5 to 6 grams) of soy powder daily. Soy powder can be easily dispersed and has a light peanut butter taste. For those who want to avoid powders, consider taking one-five capsules of the Ultra Soy Extract (40% isoflavones) daily.
- Selenium, 200 to 600 mcg daily.
- CoQ10 also works synergistically with other antioxidants to elevate cellular levels of vitamins C and E and glutathione and to help regulate blood sugar and enhance insulin sensitivity. CoQ10 also maximizes the burning of foods for fuel, helping to normalize fats in our blood. This enzyme is found in every cell. If taking statins (Lipitor), CoQ10 effectiveness gets reduced, therefore take more CoQ10. Take with water after a meal. Doses 100 mg.
- Herbal Cardiovascular Formula, two-six capsules daily with food in divided doses. www.LEF.org
- Fruit and fruit juices are rich in antioxidants, especially berries such as blueberries, pomegrates, cherries, etc.
- Lower your insulin levels by eliminating sugar and grains. Yes this includes even healthy organic whole grains. What most people fail to appreciate is that even these relatively healthier grains rapidly break down to sugars that increase your insulin levels. And, for most people with high cholesterol level, the primary reason their cholesterol is elevated is due to their high insulin levels. This approach normalizes cholesterol levels in nearly everyone -- unless they have a genetic defect called familial hypercholsterolemia.
- If you are in menopause, check your iron levels, as elevated levels of iron can raise cholesterol levels and cause major oxidative damage in the blood vessels, heart and other organs.
- How about regular exercise? Park a bit further away, take the stairs, get off the couch, bike to work once a week, do something to get moving. .
